Why Wearing Sunglasses Is Important

Even on cloudy days, ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can break through cloud cover and penetrate deeply into your eyes. Over time, excessive exposure to this powerful radiation can damage the DNA, cells, and delicate light-sensitive tissues inside your eyes. UV light can also damage the more delicate skin around your eyes and on your face. Therefore, excessive sun exposure is linked to an increased risk of chronic and sometimes serious health problems including macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts, and eye and eyelid cancer.

In certain cases, excessive exposure to UV radiation from the sun can even lead to an acute eye injury known as photokeratitis, or "eye sunburn." This is most likely to happen when you are outside around bright reflective surfaces, including snow, sand, or water, since the radiation can bounce off the surface and go directly into your eyes. Additionally, uncorrected eye problems like astigmatism or nearsightedness may get worse when you are in bright light and must squint to see.

For these reasons, wearing sunglasses every day is critical for protecting your eye health throughout your life.

What to Look for In A Pair of Sunglasses

Not all sunglasses were created equal! To stop the radiation waves from entering your eyes, you need to wear sunglasses specially made with UV-blocking filter technology. Look for sunglasses that offer "broad spectrum" protection against UVA and UVB rays.

Our Michigan optometrist and ophthalmologist can also offer you prescription sunglasses. This means your sunglasses will be custom-made for you and come with your exact vision-correction needs. That way, you do not have to wear contacts underneath them.

Lastly, when looking for a pair of sunglasses, consider the style, shape, and material. You want something that is durable and comfortable yet also a good fit for your face shape, activities, and style. Take pictures, bring a friend for some feedback, and have fun as you try them on!
