Flashes and Floaters

When you see floaters and flashes in your field of vision, it might cause some sort of concern or even curiosity about the condition. Thankfully, most flashes and floaters aren't a huge cause for concern. However, if you experience more flashes and floaters than normal, this could indicate a more serious eye condition that should be treated by an optometrist. If you're noticing frequent flashes and floaters, visit Michigan Eyecare Institute. We have provided residents of Southfield, Livonia, and Dearborn, MI, with reliable eye care services for many years. Our optometrist is happy to help you with your eye care and answer any questions or concerns you might have about flashes and floaters.

Flashes and Floaters

What are Flashes and Floaters?

Flashes and floaters in the eye appear as squiggly lines or flashes of bright light, almost like a camera lens that appears directly in your line of vision. Flashes and floaters are common when you look at a blank wall or even into the open sky. They can seem almost like microscopic creatures living in your eye. However, flashes and floaters are caused by vitreous fluid that builds up and eventually resides within the eye.

Should I Visit an Optometrist?

Experiencing flashes and floaters in your vision is completely normal. Flashes and floaters will continue to increase as you reach older age. People over the age of 50 to 70 experience more floaters than younger individuals. This is due to the aging process of the eye. However, if you notice floaters and flashers more often in your eye, this could indicate that you need to see an optometrist right away. This can be a sign of retinal detachment, which is a condition where the retina in the back of the eye detaches. This can also be accompanied by other symptoms such as eye pain and vision changes.

Our optometrist will determine whether or not your flashes and floaters are normal, or if they indicate a more serious condition. They can recommend lifestyle changes to control diseases that can lead to flashes and floaters more often. This includes conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. They can also recommend eye surgery to fix floaters if it is deemed necessary.
