Myopia, or nearsightedness, is the inability to see things in the distance and is one of the most common vision complaints children have in most pediatric optometry clinics. This condition is usually treated by an optometrist with glasses or contact lenses until a child is old enough to become a candidate for LASIK surgery.

In a limited number of children, however, this can become a serious condition that can lead to a permanent loss of vision. Fortunately, there are several ways that parents can protect their children's eyes. Michigan Eyecare Institute, serving the residents of Dearborn and the surrounding areas, explains the treatment options available.

Corrective Lenses

Glasses and contacts are the most common way to treat myopia, but these methods do not control it. While glasses can help your child see better, they do very little to prevent this vision problem from worsening. While very mild cases of myopia can be improved with the consistent use of glasses, these cases are usually the result of how the brain processes visual information rather than how light actually enters the eye.

Atropine Eye Drops

These protein eye drops are used to slow down or stop the eye from growing in such a way that the lenses become misshapen. With consistent use, children will often notice the progression of their myopia will slow down significantly or even stop. It should be noted, however, that it is extremely rare for these cases to reverse. Atropine eye drops are usually used in cases where the eyes are in danger of changing very rapidly over a short period of time.
