For the past decade, Dr. Walter Cukrowski, a partner in the Southfield-based Michigan Eyecare Institute, has quietly utilized his skills as an eye doctor and surgeon, giving of his time to perform vital missionary work to needy individuals around the world.
Cukrowski, who specializes in the treatment of cataracts, glaucoma and retinal problems, has treated hundreds of individuals living largely in squalor in Third World countries such as Guatemala, Peru and India.He journeyed to Calcutta, India, in both 1998 and 1999, in fact, providing eye care to residents while assisting in the construction of a new orphanage.
Dr. Cukrowski recently returned from Nigeria, where he performed 60 cataract surgeries and provided preventive vision screening tests to scores of others.One’s eyes are their “window on the world.” Dr. Cukrowski’s worldwide efforts to provide otherwise unavailable health care to those in need truly make him a local Unsung Hero.
